Rolling shutter

Definition

An image sensor that exposes and reads rows one after another, so each row is captured at a slightly different time.

Most phone and consumer cameras use rolling shutter because it is cheaper and offers more resolution per dollar. During fast motion, straight edges lean and objects shear because the top and bottom rows are captured milliseconds apart. Acceptable for large-scale video; problematic for geometry-sensitive robot data.
