Visual-inertial odometry (VIO)
Also: VIO · VSLAM
Definition
Estimating a device's motion by fusing camera images with IMU measurements.
VIO is how headsets know where they are without external tracking. It is extremely sensitive to camera-to-IMU timing: an offset of a few milliseconds biases the fused pose during fast head turns.
